Best Time of Day to Play Golf in Thailand: Morning vs Afternoon

There is no single best clock time to play golf everywhere in Thailand. Early morning is usually the safest default for golfers who want to limit heat exposure, especially during hotter periods, while later morning or afternoon golf can work equally well when the season, course location, hotel transfer or holiday schedule makes a later start more practical.

Choosing the right golf course is only part of planning a good round in Thailand. The time of day can change how the round feels, how early you need to leave the hotel, how much heat you experience, how weather risk fits into the day and how much time remains afterwards.

The common assumption is that the earliest available tee time must always be best. That is too simple.

An early start can be excellent for a golfer who struggles with tropical heat. The same tee time can be inconvenient if the course is far from the hotel and requires a pre-dawn departure. During Thailand’s more comfortable golf months, a later start can still provide excellent playing conditions. Afternoon golf can also fit a holiday itinerary better when the golfer wants a relaxed morning, although heat, seasonal rainfall and available daylight need more attention.

At Fairways of Eden, we therefore look at the playing time together with the golf course, hotel location, season, transfer and rest of the day’s plans rather than recommending the same tee time to every golfer.

This guide answers one specific question: what time of day should you play golf in Thailand? Month-by-month conditions belong in our Thailand golf weather guides, advance reservations belong in our tee-time booking guide, heat preparation belongs in our humidity guide, and floodlit evening golf belongs in our dedicated night-golf guide.

What Is the Best Time of Day to Play Golf in Thailand?

For most golfers visiting Thailand for the first time, an early morning round is the safest default rather than a universal rule. It reduces exposure to the strongest daytime heat and usually leaves a large part of the afternoon free after the round.

The best actual time depends on more than temperature. A golfer staying close to the course may find an early start very easy. A golfer travelling across Bangkok or from one side of Phuket to another can turn the same tee time into a very early and unnecessarily tiring morning.

Season matters too. During Thailand’s more comfortable golf periods, the difference between morning and afternoon can be smaller. During hotter periods, playing earlier becomes considerably more valuable for golfers who are sensitive to heat.

The best answer is therefore the time that creates the strongest combination of playing comfort, transfer practicality, weather tolerance and the rest of your holiday schedule.

Why Is Morning Golf So Popular in Thailand?

Morning golf is popular because it normally allows golfers to complete more of the round before temperatures reach their strongest daytime levels.

That can matter significantly over 18 holes. Even golfers using carts still spend several hours outside, walk around greens and tee boxes and remain exposed to tropical conditions throughout the round.

An early start also gives the golf day a convenient rhythm. After finishing, golfers can shower, change, have lunch or return to the hotel while still keeping much of the afternoon available.

This makes morning golf particularly attractive for golfers who want the round to be the main activity of the first half of the day rather than consume the complete holiday schedule.

Is the Earliest Tee Time Always the Best?

No. This is the most important misconception to remove from the morning-versus-afternoon decision.

The earliest available tee time may provide more comfortable temperatures, but it can also require an extremely early hotel departure. A golfer with a course 60 or 90 minutes away may need to wake well before sunrise simply to create enough travel and arrival time.

Very early mornings can also be a poor fit for golfers treating the trip as a holiday rather than a tournament schedule. Late dinners, nightlife, family activities and recovery between consecutive golf days all matter.

The goal should not be to secure the earliest possible time at every course. It should be to secure the earliest practical time that genuinely suits the golfer and itinerary when morning conditions are the priority.

When Is Afternoon Golf a Better Choice in Thailand?

Afternoon golf can be an excellent choice when a later start fits the trip better and the golfer accepts the conditions associated with that time of day.

It works particularly well for travellers who want a relaxed morning, prefer not to wake before sunrise or have other activities planned before golf. It can also provide useful flexibility when popular morning periods are unavailable.

The trade-offs depend on season and destination. Afternoon heat can be more demanding during hotter periods, while showers or thunderstorms can become more relevant later in the day during some wetter periods.

That does not make afternoon golf inherently worse. During comfortable weather, a later round can be one of the most enjoyable ways to structure a holiday day.

The key is to choose it deliberately rather than treating afternoon golf merely as the leftover option after morning tee times have disappeared.

How Do Thailand’s Seasons Change the Best Time of Day?

Season changes the importance of playing-time choice, but the month-by-month weather question should remain separate from this article.

During hotter periods, an earlier start becomes increasingly valuable because it limits the part of the round played in stronger daytime heat.

During Thailand’s more comfortable golf season, golfers can often use a broader range of daytime tee times. This gives more freedom to balance golf with hotel breakfasts, transfers, sightseeing and other activities.

During wetter periods, morning golf can sometimes reduce exposure to later showers, but tropical weather does not follow a guaranteed daily timetable. An early tee time should never be treated as a promise of a dry round.

Does Heat or Humidity Make Morning Golf Automatically Better?

Not automatically.

Morning temperatures are generally lower than later daytime temperatures, which is why early golf remains the easiest default for golfers concerned about heat.

Humidity, wind, cloud cover and local weather can make the way those temperatures feel more complicated. Coastal golf can also feel different from inland golf around Bangkok or northern Thailand.

This article therefore uses heat only as one factor in choosing a playing time rather than turning into another guide to coping with tropical conditions.

Does the Best Playing Time Differ Between Thailand Golf Destinations?

The basic trade-off remains similar throughout Thailand, but course location can change the practical answer considerably.

Bangkok requires particular attention to road traffic. A theoretically excellent early tee time can become much less attractive if reaching the course creates a difficult pre-dawn journey from the hotel.

Phuket is geographically smaller than Bangkok, but hotels and golf courses can still be positioned in very different parts of the island. A round in northern Phuket creates a different transfer schedule from one closer to the central resort areas.

Pattaya offers a large concentration of golf courses, but many are outside the immediate tourist centre. Playing-time choice should still account for the specific course rather than assuming every Pattaya round has the same transfer.

Hua Hin can provide relatively straightforward resort-to-course logistics for several major layouts, making early golf practical for many itineraries.

The same principle applies across Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Khao Yai, Koh Samui and Thailand’s other golf regions: choose the time for the actual hotel-course combination, not simply for the destination name.

Why Your Tee Time Is Not the Real Start of the Golf Day

A 7:00 tee time does not mean the golfer starts the day at 7:00.

You need enough time to travel from the hotel, arrive at the course, check in, meet the caddie, organise rental equipment if required and prepare for the round without rushing.

That means the same 7:00 tee time can feel completely different depending on whether the course is 20 minutes or 75 minutes away.

This is why golf transfers and playing times should be planned together.

Our Thailand Golf Transfers guide covers course transportation, while our separate guide explains how early to arrive at a golf course in Thailand.

What About Twilight and Night Golf in Thailand?

Late-afternoon golf and true night golf should not be treated as the same thing.

A late daylight tee time still depends on sunset and the pace of the round. A proper night-golf venue uses floodlighting that allows play after natural daylight has disappeared.

Night golf is also available only at selected courses, so it deserves its own planning process rather than being treated as an extension of every afternoon tee sheet.

For the courses, playing conditions and booking considerations, use our dedicated Night Golf in Thailand guide.

How to Choose the Right Time of Day for Your Thailand Golf Round

Start with the golfer rather than the clock.

If heat is the biggest concern, prioritise an early practical start. If a very early departure would make the golf day unnecessarily tiring, move slightly later rather than forcing the first tee time available.

If the holiday includes a relaxed morning, sightseeing or family time before golf, an afternoon round can make more sense when the season and course conditions suit it.

If you are playing several rounds, avoid assuming every day needs the same starting time. One premium championship round may deserve the earliest comfortable slot, while another easier or closer course can work perfectly later in the day.

This is where a complete itinerary is stronger than booking each tee time in isolation.

How Fairways of Eden Approaches Tee-Time Planning

Fairways of Eden does not treat the earliest tee time as automatically superior.

When building a golf schedule, the useful factors are the golfer’s preferred rhythm, course location, hotel location, travel time, season, availability and the other rounds or activities around it.

That is particularly important on multi-round trips. Four individually good tee times can still create a poor holiday if every round requires an unnecessarily early departure or leaves no recovery time between golf days.

The objective is a playing schedule that works across the entire trip.

For advance booking strategy rather than time-of-day choice, use our Thailand tee-time booking guide.

Choose the Courses and Playing Times Together

Once you know the type of playing time you prefer, use the Fairways of Eden Thailand golf course directory to compare individual courses and tee-time options.

If several rounds, hotels and transfers need to work together, you can build your custom Thailand golf holiday around your preferred daily golf rhythm.

Frequently Asked Questions About Morning vs Afternoon Golf in Thailand

What is the best time of day to play golf in Thailand?

Early morning is the safest general choice for golfers who want to limit heat exposure, but it is not automatically best for every trip. Hotel location, travel time, season and the golfer’s preferred holiday schedule should also influence the decision.

Is a 7:00 tee time good in Thailand?

A tee time around 7:00 can provide a strong balance between comfortable early conditions and finishing the round with much of the day remaining. Check how early you need to leave the hotel before deciding.

Is the earliest tee time always coolest?

Early morning temperatures are generally lower, but humidity, breeze, cloud cover and local weather also affect comfort. The earliest tee time is therefore a useful heat strategy rather than a universal guarantee of the best conditions.

Is afternoon golf too hot in Thailand?

Not necessarily. Afternoon golf is common and can work very well during more comfortable periods. Golfers who are particularly sensitive to heat should favour earlier starts during hotter conditions.

Is morning golf better during rainy season?

Morning golf can sometimes reduce exposure to later showers, but tropical weather is variable and no tee time guarantees a dry round.

Are morning golf times harder to get during busy periods?

Popular morning periods can be heavily requested at well-known courses during busy travel dates. If a particular playing time matters, request it in advance rather than relying on short-notice availability.

Should I choose my tee time before selecting my hotel?

For a multi-round trip, hotel location, golf courses and tee times should be considered together. A poor hotel-course combination can turn otherwise attractive early tee times into unnecessarily difficult golf days.

Is night golf better than afternoon golf?

They are different experiences. Afternoon golf uses normal daylight, while true night golf requires a floodlit course and is available only at selected venues.
