The Global Golf Boom: How Social Media, Celebrities & Short-Form Content Are Changing the Game

Golf is experiencing a cultural moment unlike anything in its long history. Once considered a quiet sport for traditionalists, it has exploded into one of the most talked-about and entertaining spaces on the internet. Millions of new players have started picking up clubs, golf courses are filled with younger visitors, online tournaments draw viewership comparable to mainstream events, and social media platforms are dominated by golf clips that reach audiences who never expected to enjoy the game. This global golf boom didn’t happen by accident. It is the result of a perfect storm of digital storytelling, charismatic creators, short-form video trends, and celebrities openly embracing the sport. Golf has gone from highly structured television broadcasts to a fully modern entertainment category, with humor, personality, and cultural relevance driving people toward the game. The sections below explore how social media, short-form video, influencers, and celebrities are reshaping golf’s image and driving the sport’s global growth — including what that means for golf holidays in Thailand.

Golf’s Reinvention Through Social Media

What truly changed golf was the way people began sharing it online. For decades, the average person only saw golf through the lens of professional tournaments on TV, where perfect swings and quiet commentary made the game feel distant. Social media flipped that experience completely. A 10-second clip of someone hitting the best shot of their life, a relatable chunk, a heated friendly bet, or a breathtaking drone shot over a par three can reach millions of viewers instantly.

Suddenly, golf became emotional, spontaneous and fun to watch. TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts helped people realize that golf is filled with drama, unpredictability, humor and joy. Instead of analyzing the sport, viewers began to feel it. Even non-golfers started following their favorite golf creators simply because the content was entertaining, lighthearted and full of personality.

The Power of YouTube Golf Creators

Long-form content on YouTube amplified the boom even further. Many viewers who knew nothing about golf became hooked on the personalities, stories and challenges presented by creators who made the game accessible. These creators turned golf into a shared experience rather than an intimidating sport.

Good Good Golf played a massive role in this shift. Their matches, travel videos and highly engaging personalities introduced millions of young viewers to a version of golf that felt friendly rather than exclusive. Their Creator Classics became major events that energized an entirely new generation of fans.

Rick Shiels influenced the sport in a different way. His honest reviews, simple explanations and relaxed on-course vlogs helped beginners understand equipment and techniques without feeling judged. For practical learning, no one shaped modern golf culture more than him.

Bryson DeChambeau’s entrance into the YouTube world pushed things to another level. A major champion bringing high-level insight, creative experiments and intense on-course battles with creators blurred the line between professional golf and digital golf entertainment. His videos regularly reach millions and inspire golfers around the world.

Then came the comedic wave. Bob Does Sports captured audiences with their unfiltered chaos and warm personalities. People don’t watch them for swing perfection. They watch because they feel like they’re joining a group of friends who genuinely love being on the course. Barstool’s Fore Play crew brought their own version of entertainment by turning casual rounds and amateur tournaments into engaging stories.

Creators like Micah Morris, BustaJack, GM Golf, Grant Horvat and Erik Anders Lang built strong communities with their own styles, proving that golf content doesn’t need to fit into a single box. Whether educational, emotional, cinematic or comedic, every approach found an audience. Together, these creators redefined what golf looks like online.

Viral Events: From Creator Classic to the Internet Invitational

One of the biggest drivers of golf’s global growth is the rise of creator-led tournaments. These events are not professional competitions, yet they attract enormous attention because they feel real, personal and often hilarious.

The Creator Classic quickly established itself as one of the most influential creator events in golf. Viewers tune in not for perfect play, but for the personalities, rivalries and unpredictable moments that unfold naturally. The event is talked about online weeks before and after it takes place, something that rarely happened with amateur golf before the social media era.

The Internet Invitational added another burst of momentum. It embraced the idea that golf does not need to be serious to be entertaining. Seeing creators compete, joke, argue, celebrate and fall apart on the course brought a charm that resonates deeply with younger audiences. Moments from these tournaments go viral instantly, reaching platforms far beyond the golf world.

Even Bryson’s creator events, along with Barstool’s amateur classics, have become cultural touchpoints. They give viewers a sense that golf is no longer reserved for elite athletes or country club members. Anyone with a camera and a passion for the sport can shape its future.

Why Younger Generations Are Suddenly Obsessed With Golf

One of the most fascinating elements of the golf boom is the dramatic shift in who plays the game. People in their teens, twenties and thirties, who previously barely noticed golf are now streaming golf videos, planning golf trips and visiting driving ranges in record numbers. A large part of the appeal comes from golf’s newly visible human side. Today’s content doesn’t hide mistakes, frustrations or celebrations. It highlights them. Viewers see players lose balls, hit trees, laugh at themselves and enjoy friendly competition, which makes the sport more relatable than ever.

Golf also fits perfectly into modern lifestyle culture. It blends wellness, nature, movement, friendship, travel and personal challenge into one experience. For younger people who value experiences over possessions, a day on the course offers a meaningful escape from technology-heavy routines. And perhaps most importantly, golf has become social. People film each other, share highlights, create group trips and participate in online challenges. Golf is no longer a quiet individual sport—it is a shared adventure, which is one reason why solo golf travel in Thailand and group golf trips have become more appealing to a new generation of players.

The Impact on Global Golf Travel

The golf boom has had a direct influence on international travel. People now book flights not just to relax, but to play iconic courses featured in YouTube videos or TikTok clips. Travelers want to recreate moments they’ve seen online, from scenic par threes to dramatic finishing holes.

This shift has noticeably benefited destinations like Thailand. The country is already known for warm weather, hospitality, beautiful landscapes and diverse activities. When golfers see Thailand courses featured in social media content, it sparks curiosity and desire. Many newer golfers now include Thailand on their bucket list simply because the online world portrayed it as welcoming, fun and visually stunning.

Golf holidays in Thailand have seen huge growth in the last few years, supported by modern booking platforms such as Fairways of Eden that allow players to easily choose golf courses, hotels and activities. The global golf boom and the rise of digital storytelling align perfectly with what Thailand offers.

The Future of Golf as a Digital Entertainment Sport

Looking ahead, golf’s evolution will continue to be shaped by online creators, viral formats and community-focused storytelling. The sport is no longer dependent solely on traditional broadcasting or professional tournaments. It has been adopted by the digital generation, who will keep reinventing it through humor, creativity, challenges, travel content and innovative collaborations.

Golf is becoming a lifestyle category as much as a sport. People connect through it, travel because of it, improve their mental health with it and share their experiences online for others to enjoy. With creators, celebrities and new audiences driving momentum, the global golf boom is far from slowing down.

This is the new golf culture. Lively, diverse, accessible and deeply engaging. And for many people, this modern version of golf is exactly what made them fall in love with the game in the first place.

Quickly create your next golf trip

Golf is growing rapidly due to social media exposure, creator-led content and celebrity involvement. Platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Instagram have made golf more entertaining, relatable and accessible. Younger audiences now see golf as a social and lifestyle activity rather than a traditional or exclusive sport.

Social media shifted golf from polished broadcasts to authentic, personality-driven content. Short-form videos highlight real moments such as great shots, mistakes, humor and challenges. This emotional and human storytelling helped golf reach new audiences who may never have watched professional tournaments before.

Creators like Good Good Golf, Rick Shiels, Bryson DeChambeau, Bob Does Sports and Barstool Golf have played a major role in golf’s growth. Their content combines entertainment, education and storytelling, helping millions of viewers connect with the sport in a more relaxed and engaging way.

The Creator Classic and the Internet Invitational are popular creator-led golf tournaments featuring online personalities rather than traditional professionals. These events attract massive digital audiences because they focus on personality, entertainment and community, making golf more appealing to younger and casual fans.

Younger players are drawn to golf because it blends social interaction, outdoor activity, wellness and creativity. Modern golf content highlights fun, authenticity and shared experiences. Golf now fits well with lifestyle values like travel, self-improvement and meaningful leisure rather than strict competition.

The rise of golf content has inspired many people to travel specifically to play courses they see online. Destinations like Thailand benefit from this trend, as golfers combine travel with sport, wellness and social experiences, leading to strong growth in golf holidays worldwide.

You pay for the service before you go on holiday so it doesn’t count as spending money, right?! 😀 every pick up and drop off was on time and very efficient in communication. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Black mountain, pineapple valley, palm hill and majestic creek in that order 😍

Having been to Thailand before but never playing golf I find myself thinking I was fortunate to find Fairways of Eden talked about on some reviews I saw. Robert the boss is fantastic. Not only did he get me the best rates but also was able to switch a booked day when my back played up. I won’t come to Thailand again to play golf without using FOE.
