A practical guide for golfers visiting Thailand for the first time — with caddies, carts, dress code, tipping, transfers, tee times, weather, course selection and custom trip planning.
A first-time golf holiday in Thailand is not about learning how to play golf. It is for golfers who already play, but have never experienced the way golf works in Thailand before: caddies, carts, tropical weather, course transfers, local etiquette, tipping, dress code, early tee times and a very different rhythm from golf in Europe, Australia, Japan or the US.
Thailand is one of the easiest countries in Asia for a visiting golfer, but the experience feels different from the first tee. Every round is caddie-supported, many courses use carts as part of the normal setup, transfers need to be planned properly, and the best destination depends on whether you want championship depth, seaside golf, island scenery or a short city stopover.
Fairways of Eden helps first-time Thailand golf travellers understand the practical details before anything is booked. The goal is simple: arrive prepared, play the right courses, avoid avoidable mistakes and enjoy the parts of Thai golf that make the country so popular with international golfers.
Quick Answers
What should golfers know before playing in Thailand for the first time?
Golf in Thailand is friendly, organised and very visitor-friendly, but it has its own culture. First-time visitors should understand caddies, carts, dress code, tipping, tee-time timing and transfer planning before choosing courses.
Do all golfers need a caddie?
Yes. Caddies are part of the normal Thailand golf experience. They help with yardages, club selection, green reading, pace of play, course knowledge and keeping the round smooth.
Do you need to tip the caddie?
Yes. Caddie tipping is expected after the round. It should be budgeted as part of the golf cost, not treated as an optional surprise on the day.
Are golf carts normal in Thailand?
Yes. Many Thailand golf courses use carts as part of the standard experience, especially in warm weather, hilly layouts or premium resort courses.
What should golfers wear?
Wear proper golf clothing: collared shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, golf shoes or suitable footwear, and no denim, beachwear, gym wear or flip-flops.
Are morning tee times better?
Usually yes. Morning tee times avoid the strongest heat, leave time for lunch or recovery, and reduce the chance of afternoon weather disruption in green season.
What is the biggest first-time mistake?
Choosing courses without checking transfer times. A famous course can be the wrong choice if it creates poor routing, early stress or long travel days.
The Best Destinations for a First-Time Golf Holiday in Thailand
First-time golf visitors should choose a destination based on course quality, transfer simplicity, hotel location and how easy the golf rhythm feels. Some destinations are best for championship variety, others for calm seaside golf, city stopovers or island scenery.
Thailand’s easiest destination for first-time golf travellers who want deep course choice, simple routing and strong value from one base.
Best for: Course variety Ideal stay: 5–7 nights
Pattaya golf holidays are one of the best choices for first-time Thailand golfers because the region has the country’s deepest course concentration. You can play several different styles of course without changing hotels or losing too much time in transfers.
First-time golf highlights: Pattaya lets new Thailand visitors experience premium golf at Siam Country Club Old Course, scenery at Chee Chan, classic design at Laem Chabang and better-value rounds such as Pattaya Country Club, Bangpra or Pattavia Century.
Why it works for first-time visitors
Best course depth for a first Thailand golf week
Easy to mix premium and value rounds
Private transfers from one hotel base keep logistics simple
Good for groups, solo golfers and golf-first travellers
A relaxed seaside base for first-time visitors who want premium golf, calmer evenings and an easy golf-holiday rhythm.
Best for: Easy golf rhythm Ideal stay: 5–8 nights
Hua Hin golf holidays are ideal for golfers visiting Thailand for the first time who prefer a calmer, more polished seaside golf week. The destination is easy to understand, comfortable after the round and strong enough to deliver a proper premium golf experience.
A smart first or final chapter for golfers who want international airport access, city hotels and one prestige Thailand round.
Best for: First stopovers Ideal stay: 2–3 nights
Bangkok golf holidays work well when your first Thailand golf experience starts or ends with an international flight. The city is not the easiest base for daily golf, but it is excellent for one or two well-planned rounds before moving on to Pattaya, Hua Hin or Phuket.
The strongest first-time choice for golfers who want Thailand golf with island scenery, resort hotels, beaches and a full holiday atmosphere.
Best for: Island golf Ideal stay: 5–7 nights
Phuket golf holidays work well for first-time Thailand golfers who want the golf to sit inside a full island holiday. The key is choosing the right hotel area, because course transfers across Phuket can feel longer if the base is not matched to the golf plan.
First-time golf highlights: Phuket can introduce visiting golfers to dramatic island golf at Red Mountain, resort-style golf at Laguna Golf Phuket, smoother rounds at Loch Palm and championship history at Blue Canyon.
Why it works for first-time visitors
Best first Thailand golf trip when island atmosphere matters
Good mix of dramatic, resort and scenic golf experiences
Strong for couples, families and mixed golf/non-golf trips
Hotel location should be planned carefully around course transfers
What is different about golf in Thailand?
The biggest difference is the caddie system. In Thailand, caddies are part of the normal round, not an optional extra. They support the golfer with distances, club advice, cart driving, cleaning clubs, reading greens, finding balls and keeping the group moving. For many first-time visitors, the caddie becomes one of the most memorable parts of the trip.
The second difference is the way the golf day is organised. Most visitors do not simply drive themselves to the course, arrive five minutes before tee time and walk to the first tee. A good Thailand golf day includes a sensible hotel pickup, time for check-in, caddie assignment, rental clubs if needed, warm-up, the round, shower, clubhouse time and the return transfer.
The third difference is the climate. Thailand is warm, humid and tropical, so early tee times, hydration, sun protection, light clothing and realistic pacing matter. A course that feels easy on paper can feel more demanding in the heat if the round is not planned properly.
Caddies, carts and tipping in Thailand golf
Every first-time golf visitor should understand caddie culture before arriving. Caddies are not only there to carry clubs. They are part of how the course operates, how pace is managed and how visiting golfers learn the course. Treating your caddie politely and listening to their local knowledge usually improves the round.
Golf carts are common at many Thai courses and are included or required at several premium venues. They make the round more comfortable in the heat and help the course manage pace. Some layouts are not designed to be walked easily, especially hilly or resort-style courses.
Caddie tips should be prepared in cash and given directly after the round. The exact amount varies by course level and service quality, but the important point for first-time visitors is simple: tipping is expected, normal and should be included in the total trip budget.
Dress code, etiquette and pace of play
Thailand golf courses usually expect proper golf attire. A collared golf shirt, tailored shorts or trousers, golf shoes or suitable footwear, and a clean presentation are the safest choices. Denim, beachwear, gym clothes, football shirts, sleeveless casual shirts and flip-flops should be avoided.
Etiquette is important, but the atmosphere is usually friendly. Stay calm, be polite, respect the caddie, keep up with the group in front and arrive early enough to avoid rushing. Thai golf culture values courtesy, patience and a relaxed but respectful attitude.
Pace of play matters. First-time visitors should avoid over-reading every shot, spending too long searching for balls or treating the caddie as a servant rather than a golf professional. A smile, basic courtesy and steady pace go a long way.
How many rounds should a first-time Thailand golf holiday include?
For a first Thailand golf holiday, three or four rounds in seven nights is usually the best balance. That gives enough golf to experience the destination properly while leaving space for travel, recovery, weather flexibility and one or two non-golf days.
Golf-first travellers can play more, especially in Pattaya or Hua Hin. Couples and mixed groups may prefer fewer rounds. The right number depends on the destination, transfer times, travel season and whether the trip is built mostly around golf or around a wider holiday.
The most important point is to avoid building the first trip too aggressively. Thailand golf is enjoyable, but the heat, travel and early starts can add up. A well-paced course rotation usually beats a packed schedule that looks good on paper but feels tiring by the final round.
What can be included in a first-time Thailand golf holiday?
A custom first-time Thailand golf holiday can include accommodation, confirmed tee times, green fees, professional caddies, golf carts where available, airport transfers, hotel-to-course transfers, activity transfers, rental club advice, destination planning and Thailand-based support throughout the trip.
The package can stay simple with hotel, golf and transfers, or it can include multiple destinations, non-golfer options, premium courses, private villas, boat trips, spa time and local experiences around the golf. For the full structure, see what can be included in a Thailand golf holiday.

You pay for the service before you go on holiday so it doesn’t count as spending money, right?! 😀 every pick up and drop off was on time and very efficient in communication. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Black mountain, pineapple valley, palm hill and majestic creek in that order 😍

Having been to Thailand before but never playing golf I find myself thinking I was fortunate to find Fairways of Eden talked about on some reviews I saw. Robert the boss is fantastic. Not only did he get me the best rates but also was able to switch a booked day when my back played up. I won’t come to Thailand again to play golf without using FOE.

I’ve just enjoyed a fabulous golf trip in Hua Hin, Thailand with Fairways of Eden. They did a wonderful job of organising everything for me and it completely removed a lot of the stress which allowed me to enjoy a first class holiday.
Fairways of Eden selected four fabulous courses for me to play including Black Mountain GC and Pineapple Valley GC. These are two of the best courses in Asia never mind Thailand.
Every day was full of fun and I enjoyed some laughter. The caddies were great too - Kooki at Majestic Creek was excellent. They all spoke a decent level of English and had a good understanding of the game.
The food at the courses is well worth sampling too. Special mention to the restaurants at Majestic Creek and Pineapple Valley.
Fairways of Eden ensured that I was transported to the courses and to and from the airport. They even organised my last day trip to Bangkok so I didn’t have to leave my luggage anywhere.
This was the best golf trip I have ever undertaken and I would like to acknowledge Fairways of Eden for ensuring that my holiday went so smoothly.
Courses played:
Pineapple Valley
Majestic Creek
Black Mountain
Palm Hills
