When choosing which tees to play from in Thailand, start with the total course distance and your normal hitting ability rather than relying on tee colour alone. Black, blue, white, yellow, gold and red markers do not have one universal meaning at every golf course, and choosing a suitable playing distance usually creates a better round than automatically using the same colour you play at home.

Thailand golf tee boxes can look familiar while creating a very different playing challenge from the tees you normally use at home.

A common decision on the first tee is: I usually play blue, so I will play blue today.

That can be a mistake.

Tee colours are useful identifiers within an individual golf course, but the colour itself does not tell you enough about the total distance or difficulty of the round. A set of blue tees at one course can create a very different challenge from blue tees somewhere else.

The better starting point is the actual playing distance. Compare the total yardage or metres with distances you normally enjoy playing, then consider your hitting distance, course design, elevation, forced carries, weather and whether you are seeing the layout for the first time.

At Fairways of Eden, our individual course pages include official tee distances where reliable information is available because the actual number is far more useful to a visiting golfer than the colour by itself.

This guide focuses specifically on choosing the right tee box for your Thailand round. It does not answer whether a handicap certificate is required, which Thailand golf course you should book or how difficult an individual course is; those questions are covered by separate Fairways of Eden guides and course pages.

Decision Factor
How to Use It
Common Mistake
Total course distance
Compare with yardages or metres you normally enjoy playing
Choosing by colour without checking the number
Normal hitting distance
Use your normal club distances rather than your longest shots
Choosing tees around one exceptional drive
Handicap / ability
Use it as one indication of the challenge you can comfortably handle
Treating handicap as the only deciding factor
Course difficulty
Move forward when carries, elevation or hazards make the course tougher
Assuming equal yardage means equal difficulty
First time playing
Consider the shorter option if you are genuinely uncertain
Making an unfamiliar championship course unnecessarily difficult

Which Tees Should You Play From in Thailand?

Start with the total course distance rather than the colour. Find the yardage or metres for each available tee set and compare them with the distances you normally play comfortably. If you routinely enjoy a particular course length at home, a similar total distance is a much better starting point than choosing the same colour marker simply because it looks familiar.

Then adjust for the individual course. If the Thailand layout has significant elevation, forced carries, water hazards, difficult rough or a reputation for being demanding, moving forward can make the round much more enjoyable.

If you are genuinely uncertain between two tee sets on a course you have never played before, the shorter option is often the safer holiday-golf choice.

Do Golf Tee Colours Mean the Same Thing at Every Thailand Golf Course?

No universal meaning should be assumed from the colour alone. Courses can use black, blue, white, yellow, gold, red or other identifiers in different combinations. At one venue, black may represent the longest championship setup. Another course may use a different sequence, name or combination.

Even when two Thailand golf courses use exactly the same colour, the playing distance can differ substantially. Current published course information provides a useful real-world example:

Thailand Golf Course
Tee
Published Distance
Blue
6,167 yards
Blue
6,504 yards

The colour is identical, but there is almost 500 yards between Laguna Golf Phuket’s blue tees and the blue tees on Blue Canyon’s Canyon Course. That difference is large enough to change the type of shots many golfers face throughout the round.

This is why a statement such as “I always play blue” provides less useful information than it appears to. The scorecard distance is the stronger starting point. Before teeing off, identify the actual yardage or metres for the available tee sets and choose from there.

Why Does Yardage Matter More Than Tee Colour?

Course distance changes the type of golf you need to play. From a suitable distance, par fours leave realistic approach shots, par threes use a reasonable range of clubs and longer holes still require good golf without repeatedly demanding shots outside your normal ability.

Move too far back and the character changes. A golfer may suddenly need long clubs into most par fours, struggle to carry hazards from the tee and turn reachable par fives into holes requiring several demanding shots simply to reach the green area. That can reduce enjoyment and can also contribute to a slower round.

A useful test is simple:

Does this total distance resemble golf I normally enjoy playing?

If the answer is no, the tee colour should not persuade you otherwise.

Can Your Hitting Distance Help You Choose the Right Tees?

Yes. Your normal hitting distance is one of the most useful pieces of information you can bring to tee selection.

The key word is normal. Do not choose a golf-course length around the longest drive you once hit. Use distances you can reproduce with reasonable consistency.

The USGA’s Best Tees research uses a golfer’s normal 7-iron distance as a practical reference for estimating an appropriate course length. The system is not a Thailand golf rule, but it provides a useful ability-based reference when you are deciding between several tee sets.

Normal 7-Iron Distance
Suggested Course Length
Approx. Metric Length
80 yards or less
3,500–3,700 yards
3,200–3,380 m
95 yards
4,100–4,300 yards
3,750–3,930 m
110 yards
4,800–5,000 yards
4,390–4,570 m
125 yards
5,400–5,600 yards
4,940–5,120 m
140 yards
5,900–6,100 yards
5,395–5,580 m
155 yards
6,400–6,600 yards
5,850–6,035 m
170 yards or more
6,700–6,900 yards
6,125–6,310 m

These figures are a reference rather than a rigid prescription. The USGA also recommends considering how demanding the individual course is, including factors such as topography, fairway width, forced carries, hazards and green complexes.

You can also use normal driver distance as supporting information. If several holes require carries close to your maximum drive, or most par fours leave extremely long approaches after a normal tee shot, the proposed tee set is probably too long for the kind of round you want.

Should You Choose Your Thailand Golf Tees by Handicap?

Handicap can help, but it should not be the only factor. Two golfers with similar handicaps can produce those scores in very different ways.

One may hit the ball a long way but lose shots around the green. Another may be extremely accurate but have considerably less distance. Use handicap as a broad indication of playing ability, then combine it with your normal course distance and realistic club distances.

Where a golf course publishes Course Rating and Slope Rating for different tee sets, those figures can provide additional context because they reflect more than raw yardage alone. They still do not replace the practical question of whether the playing distance suits your own game.

If your question is whether a handicap is required to play rather than which tees to choose, use our separate guide: Do You Need a Handicap to Play Golf in Thailand?

Why Can the Same Yardage Feel Much Harder on One Course Than Another?

Total distance is the starting point, not the complete description of difficulty. Two courses can show almost the same length on the scorecard and still play very differently.

Elevation can change both effective distance and stance. Water hazards can demand specific carries. Fairway bunkers can restrict driving lines. Narrow landing areas can make position more important than power.

Green design matters too. Elevated targets, severe run-off areas and difficult approaches can create challenge without adding a single yard to the scorecard. This is why Fairways of Eden individual course pages describe playing style and difficulty in addition to publishing official tee distances where available.

Use the Thailand golf course directory to compare individual layouts rather than judging them from yardage alone.

Do Thailand Golf Courses Provide Their Own Tee-Box Guidance?

Some do, and course-specific guidance can be particularly useful because the club understands the actual design, carries and available tee positions of its own layout.

Springfield Royal Country Club, for example, publishes a simple tee-selection formula: take the normal distance of your 5-iron, 5-hybrid or highest-lofted fairway wood and multiply it by 36, then choose the tee set closest to that total yardage. The club gives the example of a 180-yard 5-iron producing 6,480 yards.

This method is different from the USGA’s 7-iron-based Best Tees reference, and that difference is useful in itself. There is no single colour-based rule that every golf course must follow; clubs can provide guidance suited to their own layouts and operations.

The useful principle is: use course-specific guidance when it is available, and otherwise choose from actual distance, your hitting ability and the difficulty of the layout.

Should Visiting Golfers Play From the Championship Tees?

Only when those tees genuinely match the player’s ability and the course allows them to be used. Playing a famous championship course does not mean you need to recreate its longest tournament setup.

The back tees create the longest and often most demanding version of the golf course. That can be an excellent challenge for strong golfers with the required distance. For many holiday golfers, however, the better experience comes from a tee set that produces sensible landing areas and realistic approach shots.

There is no extra value in turning every par four into a long-distance survival exercise simply because elite players use a farther-back marker.

Does Everyone in Your Group Need to Play the Same Tees?

Not necessarily.

In recreational golf, different golfers can commonly use different tee sets when that better matches their ability, subject to the individual course and any competition conditions. A mixed-ability group should not automatically force every golfer onto one distance purely for visual consistency.

The important part is keeping the process simple and maintaining sensible course flow. Decide the tee sets before the round where possible, follow the course routing and caddie guidance, and be ready when it is your turn. A group can have a far more enjoyable day when each golfer is playing an appropriate version of the same golf course.

Can Your Thailand Golf Caddie Help You Choose the Tees?

A caddie can provide useful local context, particularly when you are unfamiliar with the course. Caddies know the routing, major carries, elevation changes and which parts of the layout become significantly harder from longer tee sets. The best decision still depends on honest information about your own game.

If your caddie has never seen you hit a shot, telling them your approximate handicap, normal 7-iron or driver distance, or usual course yardage is more useful than simply asking, “Which colour should I play?” For the wider caddie experience, see our Golf Caddies in Thailand guide.

Are Forward Tees Only for Beginners, Women or Older Golfers?

No. A forward tee is fundamentally a shorter playing option. It can suit a beginner, shorter hitter, junior, experienced golfer returning from injury, strong golfer looking for a different strategic round or anyone else whose preferred playing distance makes it appropriate.

Likewise, a golfer can use a longer tee set when their ability and distance justify it. The objective is to match the golf course with the player’s game, not to prove something through the colour or location of a marker.

Choosing the correct distance can also allow the course architecture to work more naturally because hazards, landing areas and approach shots return to distances the golfer can realistically play.

Should Heat, Wet Conditions or Fatigue Affect Your Tee Choice?

Sometimes. A tee set that feels comfortable for one home round may become more demanding during a multi-round Thailand itinerary. Travel fatigue, several rounds close together and tropical conditions can reduce energy and concentration. Wet fairways can also reduce rollout and make the effective playing length feel longer.

These factors should not become the main system for choosing tees, but they are sensible reasons to move forward when you are already deciding between two options. If heat is the main concern rather than tee selection, use our dedicated Thailand golf heat and humidity guide.

A Simple Three-Step Rule for Choosing Your Tees in Thailand

Step 1: Check the total distance.

Compare each tee set with yardages or metres you already know from courses you play comfortably.

Step 2: Adjust for your hitting distance and the difficulty of the course.

Consider your normal club distances, forced carries, elevation, hazards, course reputation and whether you are seeing the layout for the first time.

Step 3: If you are genuinely between two tees, start shorter.

You can still experience the complete golf course without making every approach unnecessarily long.

Holiday golf should provide enough challenge to be interesting without turning an unfamiliar layout into a test of maximum distance on every hole.

How Fairways of Eden Helps With Tee Selection

Our individual golf-course pages are designed to show each course as a playing decision rather than simply a place on a map. Where reliable official information is available, the Quick Course Facts include tee sets and yardages together with information about course style and difficulty.

That allows golfers to evaluate the playing length before arriving at the first tee. If you are planning several rounds, it can also create useful variety. You may choose a difficult championship layout from a sensible forward tee and then play a more forgiving course later in the trip.

The objective is not to make every golf course equally difficult. It is to choose a version of each course that allows you to enjoy what makes the layout interesting.

Choose the Course First, Then Choose the Right Version of It

Use the Fairways of Eden Thailand golf course directory to compare courses by destination and continue to individual course pages for playing information and available tee distances.

If several rounds need to fit one itinerary, you can also build your custom Thailand golf holiday around your preferred courses and playing level.

Frequently Asked Questions About Thailand Golf Tee Boxes

Which tees should I play from in Thailand?

Start with a total course yardage or metre distance similar to what you normally play comfortably, then adjust for your hitting distance and the difficulty of the individual course.

Do blue tees mean the same thing at every golf course in Thailand?

No. Do not assume one tee colour represents the same distance or difficulty at every course. For example, current published blue-tee distances range from 6,167 yards at Laguna Golf Phuket to 6,664 yards on Blue Canyon’s Canyon Course. Check the actual scorecard distance.

Should I choose tees based on my handicap?

Handicap is useful, but it should be combined with normal hitting distance, preferred course length and the difficulty of the layout.

Can 7-iron distance help me choose the right tees?

Yes. Normal hitting distance can provide a useful performance-based reference, and the USGA’s Best Tees system uses 7-iron distance to estimate an appropriate course length.

Should tourists play from the championship tees in Thailand?

Only when the distance genuinely suits the golfer’s ability and the course permits it. Playing a championship course does not require using its longest setup.

Can golfers in the same group play different tees?

Often yes in recreational golf, subject to the course and any competition conditions. Different tee sets can make sense for mixed-ability groups.

Can my caddie recommend which tees to play?

A caddie can provide useful course-specific advice, particularly when you explain your normal handicap, hitting distance or preferred course yardage.

Are forward tees only for women or older golfers?

No. Tee choice should be based on the golfer’s ability and appropriate playing distance rather than gender or age.

Should I move forward when playing a difficult Thailand course for the first time?

If you are genuinely uncertain between two tee sets, moving forward is often the safer choice on an unfamiliar demanding layout.

Does choosing shorter tees make the round less authentic?

No. You are playing the same golf course. An appropriate distance can allow hazards, landing areas and approach shots to function more naturally for your game.

Having been to Thailand before but never playing golf I find myself thinking I was fortunate to find Fairways of Eden talked about on some reviews I saw. Robert the boss is fantastic. Not only did he get me the best rates but also was able to switch a booked day when my back played up. I won’t come to Thailand again to play golf without using FOE.
